As many Playstation 3 owners will tell you since Wednesday the Playstation Network was been out of commission. The original timeframe given by Patrick Seybold (Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media for SCEA) was 1 to 2 days we are now going into day 5 which also happens to be Zombie Jesus Day (Easter).
The lack of information and a time frame for when PSN will be up and running again is extremely disheartening, especially when the information that is fed to us via the Playstation blog looks like this:
We sincerely regret that PlayStation Network and Qriocity services have been suspended, and we are working around the clock to bring them both back online. Our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure. Though this task is time-consuming, we decided it was worth the time necessary to provide the system with additional security.
We thank you for your patience to date and ask for a little more while we move towards completion of this project. We will continue to give you updates as they become available.
Now I have been reading the comment threads pretty religiously, and a lot of people are blaming the Hacktivists group known as Anonymous, who previously brought down the network for a day in protest of the Sony lawsuit against George Hotz. The group has denied all responsibility for the outage and offer this explanation as to what happened.
While it could be the case that other Anons have acted by themselves AnonOps was not related to this incident and takes no responsibility for it. A more likely explanation is that Sony is taking advantage of Anonymous’ previous ill-will towards the company to distract users from the fact the outage is actually an internal problem with the companies servers.
I bought my first PS3 this past Friday (04/22/11) for under $100 I might add, and with that a game Dr. Poonmasher recommended I buy Demon Souls. The only problem is Demon Souls is an online game, yes it can be played offline but it was meant to be played online and I am unable to experience the game the way it was meant to be experienced. Adding to that Gamefly sent me Uncharted 2 a game I have always wanted to play but never could because of a lack of PS3 in my home.
Now you would think that great Uncharted 2 is a great single player game if only the disc they sent me was scratched so at a certain cutscene it keeps freezing…very awesome. I can’t watch Netflix because it requires me to sign into PSN and because of the outage that can’t happen, so I have been catching up on Fear Clinic and the two 30 Days of Night web series to pass the time via Crackle. Hopefully PSN will be up and running soon, one of the main reasons I bought a PS3 was to be able to play DC Universe Online, and I am not going to purchase it until the network is up and running. So as a new Sony customer I am already disappointed in the product I purchased.
I would say that I will keep you updated but seeing as how Playstation only updates us once a day whats the point visit the Playstation Blog for what little info they have. Maybe it will be up and running later today, but most likely not until Tuesday. Hurry Sony IT guys work as if your jobs depended on it because chances are that the are, every day the network is down they are losing A LOT of money considering there are currently 70 million users affected at the moment.
